Gustavus, Alaska Hand-Made, Moving Parts Wooden Doll. |
Click on title for hand-crafted details.
|
This doll was handmade for Marguerite Parker Neyens in the early 1950’s when she was a baby. It was created by Sam Bouy. He hand carved the jointed body and held it together with white string. The eyes and mouth are small nails. The whiskers are horse hairs and the shirt is a tobacco pouch with the original string around the neck. The skirt is probably a piece of a heavy wool shirt of red and black plaid. Assuming the red, green and white are paint, the black looks like ink.
When held by the neck string and jiggled up and down, the doll seems to be dancing and the wood makes a clicking sound.
