Janet Henry, "First Lady" Strawberry Point (Gustavus), Alaska. |
Arriving in 1914 with the Taggert and Davis couples, the first settlers lived in tents and never ventured far without a gun! Click for more...
|
While building a log cabin that first summer, the Henrys, Taggerts, and Davis' (all newlywed couples) lived in tents along the west side of Salmon River at approximately the same location as Lee & Linda Parker's current home. The women used rifles to "defend" themselves against the Indians and the bears while the men were away getting supplies. They soon learned that the Indians were friendly (though NOT the bears!). Janet Henry was also the "First Mother" of Strawberry Flats and has written of her experiences in family memoirs.
