Glen – A Bird Eye of My Past

I was born in Skagway, Alaska in the year of 1908 on September 18, lived in Skagway, Alaska with my folks till about 1913.  When my mother and her family moved to Douglas area where I went to school for three years, Dad took up a homestead at Strawberry Point area (later called Gustavus area).  All of our family moved to there in the year of 1917.  I was 8 years old then, going to nine, stayed there almost steady except for some very short trips to lower states, Washington and California, not over 2 months at a time.  I worked at the Klag Bay Alaska gold mine for three (3) months, spring of year 1926, back to Gustavus to help my folks with the cattle.  We had a sawmill and cut lumber for the fish cannery.

In the year 1929, took up my homestead and built my little home.  The land had lots of good cattle feed on it.  In the year 1938, I got married.  We lived there till the year 1941, went to California three or four months, stayed with my wife Nell’s folks while there.

We came back to Alaska to Gustavus and Juneau Alaska worked at Juneau Lumber Mill till 1946 during the war time.  Then back to Gustavus, worked with CAA on the airfield labor and fishing with my boat in summer time.  In the year 1950 my daughter was born, lived between Gustavus & Juneau Aaa, on a lot of short jobs clearing roadways for park service, for Parker Tug & Barge, all short jobs.  In Juneau Alaska, worked for Colombia Lumber Co. Plywood Mill in the Power house firing steam boilers for the Plywood Mill.  Carpenter work, all in Juneau.  Worked with my bro A.F. Parker, Foreman on his piledriver, working on his contracts constructing ferry landing, dock repairs at Tee Harbor, Haines & Skagway Alaska and with Cole & Paddock ferry landing, Haines Alaska boat harbor and Sitka ferry landing.  Then with the Forest Service.  Carpenter work Yak 1960, hunting, Shelter camp ground work, making signs and general work.

Nell worked for the Forest Service a long time to 1980.  We sold this home in Juneau at that time and moved lock & stock back to Gustavus Alaska at that time.  Nell found out she had cancer in her collar bone.  She was in Bellingham, Wash where the Drs there found this out.  Nell had many tests here in Juneau but the Drs here told her everything was OK.

When I go South for the holidays I stay either with my daughter in Everson Wash or stay with Henrietta House in Snohomish Wash for about three months (help with the gas & food).  I have no land or place I own in the lower states.  Just the homestead land I have left here in Gustavus Alaska and the little home on the land.
